I don't like the default setting for Myst on ScummVM which just stretches the display to fill the whole screen.) It's something I do try and do when setting up old games for emulation, is trying to match the original experience and not just stretch the pixels. That's a great thread, thanks for the link. Myst Masterpiece Edition is like a high quality print of the film before any deliberate changes were made Myst Classic is like a VHS tape it was never the intended experience. I think of it like film preservation: it would be good if we could go back to watch the original Star Wars before they made all those deliberate changes, but I don't feel nostalgic for my old VHS tapes of Star Wars I want to watch the original film in the highest possible quality. The whiteish pages of the red book and other colour differences weren't artistic choices that they made in the original they always intended it to look like Myst Masterpiece Edition, they just had to degrade the colours to fit it on a CD. (The real thing to be sad about is that you can't acquire realMyst any more, now that is a truly unique version, compared to its Masterpiece Edition, see here, comparing 2000 to 2014.) Yeah it is interesting to look back (hence this post), but I guess my point is that if you never played this version and feel like you're missing out, don't get too hung up on it. (I specifically showed off the purple chair because Rand mentioned in an interview this year that he hand-picked those colours for the 8-bit palette.)įun fact: If you got the 2018 25th Anniversary physical box of Myst, the Myst DVD in that collection contains both the Classic and Masterpiece editions, both configured to run with ScummVM. The red book and purple chair are particularly egregious examples where the dithering is noticeable, but most of the time, the two versions look the same at a glance. The sky in Myst is slightly whiter in the classic edition, and there's a general graininess (dithering) caused by the 8-bit palette and a bit less colour saturation overall. I find overall the graphical difference is hardly noticeable. You aren't missing anything by playing the Masterpiece Edition. The two versions are nearly identical, but the original one has slightly grainier graphics. I often see people asking "but what if I want to play the original 1993 version of Myst, not some upgraded version, how do I do that?" The answer, basically, is don't bother, just play Myst Masterpiece Edition.
#Real myst sky mac
(Note that this is comparing the classic Windows edition I'm not sure if the original Mac version looked exactly like this.) It occurs to me it's pretty hard to search for this and has been impossible to buy the original for two decades.

Just a quick comparison of 3 scenes, since someone ( u/jonfin826) asked about it on another thread.
